Quantum Change or Second order Change

In chapter 2 page 35, the topic of quantum change or second- order was introduced. This topic was very interesting to me because it deals with how deal with a shift that occurs in groups. Change is something that obviously consistently occurs in general, and knowing how to deal with it is very important. This second type of change that occurs in groups is when there is a change in group dynamic suddenly; for example, if communication within a group is usually quiet, respectful, calm, and then suddenly, one group member has an angry outburst and storms out. In this situation, the group is not used to that type of communication, and the group dynamic is turned upside down. What can a group do in this type of instance? According to our book, a way to successfully move forward was to use what happened as a way to reformat the dynamic into a more honest way to communicate. This quantum change can improve the group in the end if it is used as a positive way to step forward and discuss or see in a way that was not done before.

  1. Hi Mia, I really like how you commented on the quantum change or second order change. "There is change that happens in general, and knowing how to deal with it is very important." It is like wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and start to see clouds outside, you would put on something to be warm or bring something just in case in weather. The second kind of change you described was a sudden change in a group dynamic. It could be like everyone has a melo personality, but one person could be having a bad day, and the group is hassle the person about the share of work that they didn't finish. That group can look to restore the situation back in order to get the group in the same page, and that is the quantum change. Really good job Mia had really good examples that I deal with personally as a coach and as a student.

  2. Mia,
Thanks for your input on quantum change. i enjoyed your example, as I have been in a very similar situation and the group all felt the way you described. Its typically very hard to readjust and refocus after an intense or uncomfortable situation. I think that explaining how having a better understanding of quantum change allows one to look at the situation in context and move forward is very valuable. I've learned through many group interactions that using this tool to reformat and rearrange the group dynamic is need from time to time. Thanks for your input!
